I found a number of places recommended online as having gluten free options that really didn't. The first day there I was glutened at the Rainforest Cafe-- big time. I lost a day a of my vacation to that mistake!

We went to Harahs that supposedly has GF options and I did okay there, but they don't have a GF menu and they don't seem to be aware of GF needs.

I did find one place that was safe, had a GF menu and seemed to understand cross-contamination-- Los Amigos Restaurant at 1926 Atlantic Avenue ~ 609-344-2293. The food was pretty good and they didn't make me sick-- so that was great.

Most of the time we drove out of town to find restaurants. We tried to find Drazil Organic Restaurant in Egg Harbor Township, which had good reviews but sadly it was gone.

Atlantic City was nice enough, but I doubt we will be going back anytime soon.

Udi's GFCF Bread

Udi's is my new favorite GFCF bread. It makes amazing toast. It even tastes decent without microwaving or toasting. It's a bit dry, but the first gluten free bread I've found to be edible without some kind of cooking.
I also recommend the Udi's bagels. They don't seem to be boiled, so they are really more like a roll with a hole than a bagel. However, it's a nice roll and tastes great with margarine and sprinkled with lemon juice to simulate cream cheese.

You will find Udi's in the gluten free freezer section. I have found it in the Stop and Shop natural foods aisle, Whole Foods, the Good Food Store and the Fruit Center.

For more traditional tasting bagels I believe you have to make them yourself. See my post (http://pheelingphoody.blogspot.com/2010/03/i-just-made-some-really-good-bagels.html) for a link to a great recipe.

GFCF French Toast

I came up with this recipe for vegan gfcf french toast. They have gluten free pizza and pasta that can be made up without cheese. The gluten free pizza is pretty good, but the best part is the texture of the gluten free spaghetti. Usually the gluten free pastas are better when they are the smaller variety like macaroni, this is the first time I've had one of the long varieties of pasta that is good.

It's so nice to find a place that is reasonably priced, fast and delivers. I say Americanized because it has sugar, raisins & caraway seeds added. It's a blend of several traditional and GFCF recipes I've tried. It's a little fluffier than the kind I grew up eating, but really good anyway. If you want a round loaf, put it into a cake or pie pan, as this dough is more runny than the traditional version. Note: the coconut flour needs the egg. If you don't eat eggs, replace the coconut flour with an alternative flour and reduce the amount of vegan butter milk.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees

½ c tapioca starch/flour

¼ c brown rice flour

½ c coconut flour

¾ c garbanzo bean flour
1 t xanthum gum

½ t baking soda

1/2 c sugar

2 t baking powder (1 t if you like more dense bread)

1 t caraway seeds
2 T Spectrum vegetable shortening
1 egg

2 c vegan butter milk (1 ½ T cidar vinager in measuring cup, then fill to top w/ rice milk)
¾ c raisins

Whisk together dry ingredients. Plain Tostidos work (beware of flavored varieties as they often contain dairy or gluten)

Hummus
2 cans (about 19 oz) of chick peas (garbanzo beans)
juice of 1/2 lemon
2 T tahini
2 crushed garlic cloves
1 t cumin

Put all ingredients in food processor (or blender) and mix until well blended
Put into serving dish. Pour a couple of tablespoons olive oil on top and sprinkle with chili powder (I promise this isn't very spicey when not cooked). Do not mix the olive oil into the hummus! If you bring it to a party someone will eventually mix it in, but it's best if the oil rests on top-- It makes the textures more interesting.

Egg Salad

Egg Salad - another good standby
4 boiled eggs (preferably omega 3 eggs)
1/4 c Helman's light mayonaise
1/2 t dijon mustard

mash together with a fork

GFCF Bagels

I just made some really good bagels from a recipe in Living Without Magazine (October/November 2009 issue). If you have a subscription to this magazine (and if you can't eat gluten or dairy, you should) then you can logon and find recipes from past issues (http://www.livingwithout.com/).

Search for the Gluten Free Dairy Free Bagel Recipe.
You'll also have to do a search for the Multi-Grain Flour Blend (don't forget the dash, as it didn't recognize multi grain).

The only thing that got left off in the website is how to top the bagels-- here's how:

To add toppings whisk together 1 egg white and 2 Tablespoons cold water, brush on bagels and sprinkle toppings (poppy seeds, sesame seeds, salt, etc.) over top

The best part is the ones I made have toppings I like (sesame seeds, salt, and onion), but also they aren't sweet like the GFCF bagesls I've bought at the grocery store. I adapt it in the following ways:

half the bean noodles recommended (more flavor and less work)

garlic paste instead of chopped garlic cloves (easier-- I buy it at Trader Joes)

pickled ginger (easier as it's already sliced)

add bamboo shoots

add water chestnuts

(This time I tried the mini corn, but it wasn't very good)

Vanilla Icing recipe and great GFCF Cake Mix

I can't remember where I found this recipe for vegan vanilla icing, but it's simple, easy and yummy.

GFCF Vanilla Icing

1/2 c vegan margarine

1/4 c vanilla rice milk (or other non-dairy milk)
3 c powdered sugar
1 1/2 t gf vanilla
Put all margarine, vanilla and milk in large mixing bowl and cream together with a hand mixer. Add to a greased 8x8 pan or muffin tin.
Bake for 20-30 minutes
Note: This should be kept in the refridgerator after it cools as it does not keep very long without refrigeration.

Surrender to Win

Giving Up
For most of my life I’ve been giving things up, letting things go. It seems this is my life’s lesson. My husband is fond of saying, "Life keeps teaching us the same lessons until we learn them." Once in a while I feel the need to test a food item and see if it still makes me violently ill. But mostly I try to find fun restaurants and great recipes that are alternatives for the foods I love.

My plan is to post the things I've learned over the years. I gave up dairy (casein) 26 years ago, shellfish 14 years ago, soy 3 years ago and gluten a year and a half ago.

I focus on GFCF because Gluten and Dairy are the most difficult to avoid, especially in restaurants.

My dietary restrictions

My Restrictions, My Approach to Food
I do not eat dairy (casein) or gluten as my stomach hates those things.
